MOTHER LODE FRIENDS OF MUSIC
Fourth Regional
Young
Musicians’ Competition
RULES AND PROCEDURES
The Mother Lode Friends of Music,
the performing arts society based in
The competition is divided into three categories:
A. Senior Solo Division: open to musicians aged thirteen or older, as of May 4,
2008, through high school competing as individual soloists (with or without accompaniment);
B. Junior Solo Division: open to musicians of exceptional promise aged twelve or younger, as of May 4, 2008, competing as individual soloists (with or without accompaniment);
C. Ensemble Division: open to groups of two or more young musicians of any age through high school, performing together.
Other rules and procedures are as follows:
1. The deadline for applications is Friday, March 7, 2008. The auditions will take place in Sutter Creek on Sunday, April 6, 2008 in the afternoon.
2. Musicians competing in either the Senior or Junior Division may audition and perform either as a soloist or with an adult accompanist. The accompanist may be of their choice, other than the applicant’s teacher, or an accompanist can be provided upon request by the Mother Lode Friends of Music.
3. Works performed at the concert of winners must be the same as those selected for audition, and must be drawn from the standard repertory of classical music. Popular works, jazz, and folk music are not suitable. Concerto movements are acceptable, except for pianists, as a second piano for accompaniment will not be available at either the audition or the performance. Works submitted in the Ensemble Division could include solo instrument or voice with piano accompaniment, piano or vocal duet, or instrumental ensemble. In every case, the work selected for audition should be between 4 to 8 minutes, although shorter works are allowed in the Junior Solo Division. The panel of judges will make the final determination regarding the appropriateness of any selection. Entrants need not have their selection memorized for audition, but all winners, except those in the Ensemble Division, must perform their works by memory in the public concert on May 4, 2008.
4. An individual may compete both in a Solo Division and in the Ensemble Division, but not with the same selection. The same contestant may compete in only one ensemble. A contestant may compete in the Solo Division on more than one instrument or with both instrumental and vocal selections, but can win only once as a soloist.
5. Contestants will be judged by a panel of distinguished judges comprising professional-level musicians and music teachers who reside and teach outside of the four-county foothill area. Expertise in all the major musical categories—strings, winds, piano and voice—will be represented. The judges will provide each contestant with a written evaluation of his or her performance following the audition.
6. Only entrants recommended by a private or school music teacher familiar with his or her ability will be invited to compete. Due to limited time for the auditions, the president of the jury reserves the right to limit the number of contestants to the strongest applying, based on submitted information.
7. More than one winner or, alternatively, no winner, may be selected in each division, with the decision left entirely to the discretion of the panel of judges.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Interested young musicians must complete and submit the following application form by March 7, 2008. A written recommendation by a private or school music teacher who is familiar with the applicant’s current level of ability must be submitted, either separately or with the entrant’s form. Groups competing in the Ensemble Division must submit an applicant’s form and teacher’s recommendation for each player. Applicants will be notified by February 22 of their admissibility and the time and place of their audition. If an accompanist is needed, an opportunity to rehearse before the audition will be provided.
